CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Jan. 25, 2013) – With a hectic off season full of photo shoots and sponsor commitments, Regan Smith is still finding a way to chill – on the ice that is. Smith, the JR Motorsports driver of the No. 7 TaxSlayer.com Chevrolet and avid hockey fan, hosted the seventh-annual “Race Night” at the Charlotte Checkers game Friday evening.
“Checkers games are always a lot of fun,” Smith said. “Usually I come here as a fan, but the Checkers staff was gracious enough to let me host tonight. I’d be here either way but tonight was a great experience. Plus, I’m a big supporter of minor league hockey.”
Prior to the game, Smith joined a dozen other Nationwide Series drivers for an autograph session. He then took to center ice for the ceremonial puck drop.
“It’s been a busy few weeks for me,” Smith added. “But I always find time to watch or attend hockey games. The great thing about the Checkers is they’re right downtown, so it’s a fun way to spend an evening. As an added bonus, they’re also affiliated with my favorite NHL team, the Carolina Hurricanes.”
“Race Night” offered a unique blend of traditional hockey action surrounding race-themed entertainment. The Checkers players wore special “Race Night” jerseys, which following the game, were auctioned off to benefit local charities.
The Charlotte Checkers are the AHL affiliate of the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes. It’s one of only four AHL teams located less than 200 miles away and in the same state as its NHL partner. The team is currently ranked second in the South Division with a record of 42 wins and 26 losses.
