Eating At-Track Is Easy...If You Have a Wilmington Grill

News Wilmington Grill

An unheralded but essential piece of equipment is the team's grills. As the official grill of JRM, Wilmington Grill stands up to grueling weekends on the road providing meals for our road crew all year long.

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (May 11, 2018) – It is said that an army travels on its stomach. The same can be said for a race team like JR Motorsports in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

Traveling from one coast to the other and back again—several times—over 33 weeks can be very appetite-inducing, and that’s not even counting all the work done to get JRM’s four-car team on the track and racing up front. Long days at the track can be tiring and it’s hard, hard work for the teams.

It’s not unusual for three full meals to be prepared per day at the track. A hot breakfast and a hearty pre-race meal are usually on the docket for a full day at the track, and that’s where Wilmington Grill comes in.

“Wilmington Grill has been a great partner for JR Motorsports,” said Matt Weaver, who manages the transportation department for the team. “They make quality grills that can stand up to 33 weeks on the road with our race teams, and that is important. We put in a lot of long hours at the track, and when you pull a Wilmington Grill out of the transporter, you know that you’re going to be able to feed your teammates the way they need to be fed to stay at the top of their game.”

The North Carolina company is based in Wilmington, as the name implies, on the banks of the Cape Fear River. JCC Outdoor Products manufactures the heavy-gauge 304 stainless steel creations with a patented seven-sided cooking chamber there, and the results are top-notch. Originally, stainless steel was used to help protect against the salt air in the coastal region, and it works spectacularly well inside the garage areas at tracks across the country.

It’s not just the outside of the grills that is stainless steel. The grates, heat deflector and even reinforced drip pans are made from the durable metal. The burners are cast stainless steel as well, and they last a lifetime. No changing rusted-out burners is required, because these don’t rust. You can change the flame height with the twist of a dial, and each of the grills cooks with indirect heat, which eliminates flare-ups and allows cooking between 350-600 degrees. Each grill also features a slide-out ash tray to aid in cleaning.

In short, these are high-powered, well-built machines designed to put the work in and turn out amazing quantities of great food without missing a beat, much the same way the Chevrolet Camaros the team fields in competition do on the track.

The combination of the design and construction of a Wilmington Grill allows it to be converted to a smoker or a steamer with available accessories, too.

JRM’s primary transport drivers—Weaver, Brian Finney, Chris Waddell and Jeff Miles—each have access to a Wilmington Grill, the Official Gas Grill of JR Motorsports, and each puts it to best use. It is amazing what can be done, even in the most pressing of time frames, with a Wilmington Grill.

“Wilmington Grill has been part of our team for several seasons, and this is the third edition of their products that has hit the road with us,” Weaver, who drives the transporter for Justin Allgaier and the No. 7 BRANDT Professional Agriculture team, said. “I can’t imagine not having it with us.”

Each comes with a “Built-for-a-Lifetime” Seven-Year Warranty, which means that JCC Outdoor Products guarantees each unit “to be free from defects in materials and workmanship for a period of seven years from the date of original purchase, except for the burners. Stainless steel burners are warranted for the life of the grill.” That’s a solid back-up.

“These things are great,” said Miles, who drives the transporter for the No. 5 Pilot Flying J team. “They are just so solidly built, and you can cook so much on it. We use them pretty hard, week in and week out, and they stand up to everything we might put them through.”
