ALTAMAHAW, N.C. (June 11, 2018) – On Saturday night at tiny Ace Speedway, the 125-lap CARS Response Energy Late Model Stock Car Series event was dubbed “The Race at Ace 125.” For JR Motorsports teammates Josh Berry and Sam Mayer, it turned out to be more like a demolition derby. Both drivers were eliminated in multi-car crashes during the event on the tight .400-mile oval.

Berry started the event third and raced in the top three for the first 70 laps, saving his No. 88 All Things Automotive Chevrolet for the end. A caution waved at that point, and on the ensuing restart contact from other cars cost him a position to fourth. After some more contact on the following caution flag, Berry got put back in the field, and eventually got taken three-wide in Turns 1 and 2. After recovering from a half-spin, he went to Turns 3 and 4 and was not as fortunate. The accident ended his evening in 14th place.

Mayer qualified 16th and had moved up several spots over the first 70 laps through a competition caution and some canny driving. On a restart at lap 70, Mayer decided to wait a while longer to make his charge toward the front as the action was picking up.

As the laps wound down, the inside line Mayer was running got stacked up after contact, and as he was on the brakes to avoid the cars ahead, the driver behind piled into his No. 9 Menards Chevrolet and drove it into the accident. The damage was sufficient to end his night, and he finished 20th.

Next up for the JR Motorsports team is the June 23 CARS Response Energy Late Model Stock Car series event at Carteret Count Speedway in Swansboro, N.C.

Josh Berry, driver No. 88 All Things Automotive Chevrolet team

“We were pretty pleased with qualifying third, and I felt like we had a pretty solid All Things Automotive Chevrolet in the race.  Ace Speedway is a pretty small track, and unfortunately we just caught the bad end of a couple restarts and ended up getting torn up.  I felt like we were a solid second- or third-place car, but sometimes you will have those days.”

Sam Mayer, driver No. 9 Menards/JR Motorsports Chevrolet team

“Wish we would have gotten my Menards No. 9 Chevrolet another solid finish, but unfortunately that didn’t happen. It was, in my opinion, not a great race for us, but it was a fun weekend.  On to the next one!”
