Late Model Menards News Sam Mayer South Boston

Sam Mayer brought home a pair of top-10 runs Saturday night in JRM's late model, still sporting the Gray Ghost throwback scheme, at South Boston Speedway in Virginia.

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. (Aug. 11, 2018) – Sam Mayer got to know South Boston Speedway very well on Saturday, logging top-10 finishes in both 75-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series features at the legendary Virginia oval.

In his first visit to South Boston, Mayer qualified 12th for the evening’s first 75-lapper, but fell back on the initial start when his Menards-backed JR Motorsports Chevrolet—still wearing its Gray Ghost paint scheme and the No. 28 from last week’s event at Hickory--picked up a loose condition. At lap 50, under caution, crew chief Bryan Shaffer called his young charge to pit road for a chassis adjustment. It was a big one, and it cost Mayer a lap, but he resumed the race in 20th spot.

Rapidly dispatching the other cars that were a lap down, Mayer was in the free-pass position when the next caution waved and transferred back to the lead serial. With not a lot of laps remaining, he passed his way to ninth by the end of the first race.

Starting eighth in the second 75-lap run, an early caution allowed Mayer to make use of the choose cone, which meant he could choose which lane to restart in. He chose the inside from ninth, and after another quick caution, chose the outside from eighth spot. On the restart, the 15-year-old Wisconsin driver rolled the top groove to sixth, where he stayed until lap 40.

Choosing the bottom to protect his spot, Mayer was on the gas when a driver in front of him missed a shift on the restart. Mayer managed to avoid the slower car, but lost a ton of ground and a couple of positions in the exchange. That put him eighth in the order and he finished the second feature there.

Next up for Mayer and teammate Josh Berry is a CARS Response Energy Tour Late Model Stock Car Series event at Wake County Speedway on Aug. 25. The rescheduled race was rained out in April.

Sam Mayer, driver No. 28 Menards Chevrolet team

“We had a decent car all weekend, but our Menards Chevrolet never really had that extra little bit to put us in contention to win. Thanks to all the guys for working so hard in the heat, and to Josh (Berry) for coming up and coaching me in my first appearance at South Boston!”
