HICKORY, N.C. (July 30, 2018) – Sam Mayer dominated the first of two 40-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model features on Saturday night at Hickory Motor Speedway, and teammate Jagger Jones logged two top-seven finishes to complete the night for the JR Motorsports Late Model team.

In the first race, Mayer started from the pole in his No. 9 Menards Chevrolet and led every one of the 40 laps. The only time he had to slow down was for yellow flags in the second half of the race for single-car spins. Jones, meanwhile, qualified seventh and stayed there all 40 laps. With the inversion from the first race to the second, that meant Mayer would begin the second 40-lapper from 10th spot while Jones would begin on the front row in second spot. A rain delay pushed the start of the second feature back as well.

Jones, the 15-year-old from Arizona, grabbed the lead on the green by using the outside lane on the .363-mile oval and held it for the first 10 laps, only to develop a loose condition. Charlie Watson passed Jones for the lead at lap 11 and took it all the way to the checkered. Jones lost three more spots over the final 30 laps and finished fifth.

Mayer, the 15-year-old Wisconsin native, was on the move at the start of the second feature but had some trouble in traffic. Racing in the middle of three-wide on lap 11, the car to his outside slapped the wall and came down the track, hooking the rear of Mayer’s Chevrolet and turning him into the outside wall. The damage was enough to end Mayer’s race, and he wound up eighth at the finish.

Next up for the JR Motorsports team is the CARS Late Model Stock Car Series Throwback 276 at Hickory on Aug. 4. Both Josh Berry and Mayer will have throwback paint schemes for the event.

Sam Mayer, driver No. 9 Menards/JR Motorsports Chevrolet team

“It was good to get that first victory with JRM. We had the dominant car all day, leading all 40 laps from the pole in the first one. We were really fast and we were probably going to contend for the sweep, but getting caught up in that wreck kept us from doing that. I’m really proud of the how hard the guys worked and we’ll be back next week to contend for another win in the CARS LMSC Throwback 276!”

Jagger Jones, driver No. 88 JR Motorsports Chevrolet team

“We didn’t have the qualifying we wanted which put us a bit behind for the first race. We finished seventh but knew we would start up front because of the invert for the second race. We had decent speed but would still have to make some adjustments to be competitive for the win. We battled hard at the beginning and got out front but struggled with the balance and came home fifth. Huge thanks to JR Motorsports and the whole team, Josh Berry for the driving help, my spotter Matt, Method Race Wheels, Ezcut CNC, XYO Network. We will keep working and be better when we come back to Hickory on Sept. 1.”
