Crew Chief - No. 8 Chevrolet

Taylor Moyer begins his fifth season with JR Motorsports with a familiar face behind the wheel of the No. 8 Chevrolet. The 35-year-old Vermont native will reunite with Josh Berry for the coming season after spending 2022 calling the shots for Sam Mayer in the team’s No. 1 Camaro.

It will be the second consecutive season in which Moyer will have a single driver rather than several. Last year with Mayer—in which the team made the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs and fell just short of the Championship 4—was his first in four seasons with just one driver in the car. Moyer led Mayer to eight top-five and 16 top-10 finishes on the way to a seventh-place finish in series points.

Moyer’s goal remains the same in 2023: winning a fourth NXS championship for JR Motorsports.

Berry and Moyer were teamed together for the first 12 races of the 2021 season and it was a fruitful pairing. Berry, with Moyer on the box, earned his first NXS victory and Moyer’s first as a crew chief in the spring at Martinsville Speedway, sealing a spot in the owner’s championship for the No. 8 car in the process. The win also marked the first for the No. 8 team at JRM. By season’s end, Moyer and drivers Berry, Mayer, Miguel Paludo and team owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. notched one win, five top-five and 13 top-10 finishes.

In 2019-20, Moyer proved his versatility and capability with 12 different drivers in the No. 8 Chevrolet, producing a combined 18 top-five and 42 top-10 finishes and a pair of top-10 efforts in the year-long NXS owner standings in both seasons.

Moyer, a native of Shoreham, Vt. and a graduate of The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, came to JRM from Hendrick Motorsports following the 2018 season.  He began working at Hendrick at the age of 19 as a member of the developmental pit crew. From there, he climbed the ladder system to the parts department, chassis and body shop, and race shop – ultimately becoming a race engineer. Moyer collected one win, nine top-five and 33 top-10 finishes as a NASCAR Cup Series race engineer between working with the No. 5 team and driver Kasey Kahne and the No. 24 team and then-rookie driver William Byron.

Moyer’s passion for motorsports began at a young age, helping childhood friends compete in sprint cars and dirt modifieds at dirt tracks in Vermont.  After taking engineering classes in high school, Moyer knew he wanted a career in racing. Following graduation, Moyer packed up his belongings and moved to Charlotte to attend engineering school at UNCC.

When Moyer isn’t at the racetrack, he spends time on his farm where he resides in Olive Branch, N.C. He also enjoys hunting, fishing, snowboarding, mountain biking, and owns a high-end storage rack company for outdoor gear.
