Crew Chief - No. 1 Chevrolet

Taylor Moyer enters his fourth season atop the pit box as crew chief for JR Motorsports in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. It’s a new year and a new car number but Moyer settles into a familiar role with Sam Mayer who will compete fulltime in the organization’s No. 1 entry.

Paired with a fulltime driver, it’s a clear departure from the roster carousel Moyer has found success with over the last three years. In fact, the 2022 season marks the first year that Moyer will compete with just one driver behind the wheel, but the goal remains unchanged: to win races and bring a fourth NXS championship back to JRM.

The 2021 season was a fruitful one for the 34-year-old Moyer and his roster of drivers, consisting of Josh Berry, Miguel Paludo, Mayer and team owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. Moyer helped lead the team to his first career win as a crew chief with Berry behind the wheel at Martinsville Speedway and earned a berth in the owner’s championship playoffs. The win also marked the first for the No. 8 team at JRM and for Berry in NXS competition. By season’s end, Moyer and company notched one win, five top-five and 13 top-10 finishes.

In 2019-20, Moyer proved his versatility and capability with 12 different drivers in the No. 8 Chevrolet, producing a combined 18 top-five and 23 top-10 and 42 top-10 finishes and a pair of top-10 efforts in the year-long NXS owner standings in both seasons.

Moyer, a native of Shoreham, Vt. and graduate of The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, came to JRM from Hendrick Motorsports following the 2018 season.  He began working at Hendrick at the age of 19 as a member of the developmental pit crew. From there, he climbed the ladder system to the parts department, chassis and body shop, and race shop – ultimately becoming a race engineer. Moyer collected one win, nine top-five and 33 top-10 finishes as a NASCAR Cup Series race engineer between working with the No. 5 team and driver Kasey Kahne and the No. 24 team and then-rookie driver William Byron.

Moyer’s passion for motorsports began at a young age, helping childhood friends compete in sprint cars and dirt modifieds at dirt tracks in Vermont.  After taking engineering classes in high school, Moyer knew he wanted a career in racing. Following graduation, Moyer packed up his belongings and moved to Charlotte to attend engineering school at UNCC.

When Moyer isn’t at the racetrack, he spends time on his farm where he resides in Olive Branch, N.C. The young crew chief also enjoys hunting, fishing, snowboarding, mountain biking, and owns a high-end storage rack company for outdoor gear.
