MOORESVILLE, N.C. (April 3, 2020) – The month of April 2014 just might be the most successful single month in JR Motorsports history...not counting the Novembers which brought the team its three NASCAR Xfinity Series championships.
In three races during the month of April that year, JRM won them all. In 10 combined starts, JRM Chevrolets averaged a finish of 4.4.
The first race of the month, fittingly on April 4, 2014, came at Texas Motor Speedway and featured four cars for the first time in the team’s history. Chase Elliott won the event, his first career NXS victory, with Kevin Harvick fourth, Dale Earnhardt Jr. fifth and Regan Smith seventh. Putting four cars in the top eight was an incredible achievement in and of itself. Adding the victory was icing on the cake, and it was Elliott’s first on the way to the series championship in November.
The next event, a week later at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway, saw Elliott win again, with Harvick seventh and Smith eighth.
After a week off, the series traveled to Richmond Raceway, where Harvick took the victory over Elliott in second with Smith again eighth.
To recap, that’s three races in April, with three wins, six top-five finishes and 10 top-10 finishes in 10 combined starts.
The rest of the season saw Harvick win three more times, at Kentucky Speedway, Atlanta Motor Speedway and at Chicagoland Speedway. Elliott added a victory in the first Chicagoland event and clinched the NXS title in the season’s penultimate race at Phoenix Raceway. Kasey Kahne won the night race at Daytona in a 1-2 finish with Smith.
April’s performance kick-started that championship drive, and remains one of the top accomplishments in a portfolio that includes many of them.
