Learn more about the Crew Chief of the No. 8 Chevrolet

Adam Wall returns to JR Motorsports in 2024 as crew chief for the No. 8 team and driver Sammy Smith following a five-year stint with Hendrick Motorsports’ NASCAR Cup Series team.

The 34-year-old Illinois native served as an engineer on the No. 1 team with JRM from 2016-18 under crew chief Kevin Meendering, and his ascension to the top spot on the pit box comes after working with the No. 48 and No. 5 teams at Hendrick Motorsports. His return to JRM as a crew chief is the latest example of the unique relationship between HMS and the team owned by Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Wall began his career in the chassis shop at HMS in 2011, sweeping floors and measuring race-car bodies in the fabrication shop. In 2013, he moved on to assembly and tear-down duties for the Nos. 48 and 88 teams and to setup duties in 2014.

In 2015, Wall was part of the on-the-road crew with Earnhardt Jr. and crew chief Greg Ives, and that led to his move to JRM in 2016.

During his tenure with JRM under Meendering’s tutelage, Wall helped lead driver Elliott Sadler to the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs in each of his three seasons, capped by a second-place finish to JRM teammate William Byron in the 2017 championship.

Over his three seasons with Meendering and the No. 1 team, Wall helped lead Sadler to three victories, 40 top-five and 78 top-10 finishes in 99 starts.

Returning to HMS in 2019 with Meendering, Wall was the second engineer on the No. 48 team and assumed the lead role midway through the season. Two seasons later, in 2021, Wall was the lead engineer on the NASCAR Cup Series championship-winning team with driver Kyle Larson and crew chief Cliff Daniels.

A native of Teutopolis, Ill., Wall attended the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, earning a degree in mechanical engineering with a focus on motorsports. While pursuing his degree, Wall interned with the CARS Tour for three seasons in the early years of the series’ transition from the Hooters Pro Cup Series.

The 34-year-old Wall and wife Amy have two children, 7-year-old Austin and 4-year-old Cecilia.
