Malik Ray caught the iRacing bug early on, and the primary force behind his interest was Dale Earnhardt Jr. The South Carolina native caught the video of his new team owner racing in a championship race in 2007 or 2008, and it lit the fuse for him to make it to the top level of the sport.
“I watched the video of him in his first championship on iRacing in like 2007 or 2008,” Ray said. “I watched him and now I’m in the same series and driving for him. I got started from that video. He dominated the whole thing, it was just him and Josh Berry. I thought it was cool.”
With his new team owner as his inspiration, Ray got into the sport in a big way a few years later.
“I got the game in 2012 or 2013 and I didn't think I would be as fast as I was. I was just doing it because I thought it was fun. And then I just happened to end up being good at it.”
Ray earned his first career eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series victory in March of 2024 in his 94th start, at the virtual Atlanta Motor Speedway and has put in strong performances at draft-heavy and technical tracks throughout his career.
Racing this season for JR Motorsports in the series means quite a lot to Ray. “I’m excited, and I would say more motivated than before because I know this team probably has a lot of eyes on them in comparison to the rest.”
Ray is known for his race-craft, being able to improve positions no matter where he starts and picking his way up the order as the race progresses.
Sponsorship for Ray comes from Tint Solutions, Logitech, PGR Esports and Fort Worth Print Screening.
