Hall 11th, Kvapil 13th in ValleyStar Credit Union 300 at Martinsville; Hall Takes JRM’s First Va. Triple Crown

JR Motorsports Late Model driver Connor Hall had a chance for a couple of career milestones on Saturday night at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway in the annual ValleyStar Credit Union 300 for Late Model Stock cars.

He finished .500 for the night.

Hall finished 11th in the annual 200-lap race, the crown jewel event in the Southeast, to earn his first Virginia Triple Crown championship. Teammate Caden Kvapil, making his first start in the Southeast’s biggest event, drove to a solid 13th-place finish in his first attempt at the signature event.

Hall, who is in the middle of a tight points battle in the zMAX CARS Tour LMSC standings, started his No. 88 Bass Pro Shops/TRACKER Boats Chevrolet 13th in the 40-car field and held station near the front of the pack for much of the extra-distance event. As the race went on, the Virginia native got caught in the shuffle for position late in the going and finished 11th.

The result may not have delivered a coveted grandfather clock, but it did result in the Virginia Triple Crown title, which came with a brand-new trophy and a $20,000 check at the end of the night.

Kvapil, driving the No. 8 Carolina Carports Chevrolet from the JRM stable, had a good run in qualifying and slotted in 19th overall despite being just a tenth of a second off the fast time. In his heat race, Kvapil lined up fifth and finished fourth, locking himself into the starting lineup for the big show.

Lining up 15th in the field for the main, Kvapil maintained that position until around lap 40, when contact just in front of him caused damage to the rear of Kvapil’s car. After getting hit from behind, a piece of another car stuck in his rear bumper. The debris caused him to come down pit road to remove it and dropped him all the way to 30th for the restart.

A decrease in rear grip came as a result of the collision, and the young driver spent much of the remainder of the race working through the handling issues during the competition cautions. With 25 laps remaining, Kvapil restarted from 24th and climbed all the way to 13th over the remaining distance.

“It’s a really good thing to win the Virginia Triple Crown, but it’s hard to be so happy and celebrate this when I felt like we were right there at the end of the race. I don’t know if I burned the right rear off or just over-adjusted on my part or what. As far as winning the Triple Crown, it’s a really cool honor to put my name in that record book and I think it’s the first Triple Crown for JR Motorsports as an organization. We’re going to take this and go back to the shop and celebrate a little bit. My goal is to come back next year and win a grandfather clock.”

“It was definitely a chaotic night making my first attempt at Martinsville Speedway but it was a good learning experience against a lot of good competition. I felt like we had a pretty good car during the feature but track position was very important and having to come from the back made it a lot harder. Thanks to my dad Travis and the rest of the crew for working hard to give me a fast JR Motorsports/Carolina Carports/Bass Pro Shops No. 8 Chevy all weekend along with Dale, Kelley, LW, and Bryan (Shaffer)for giving me the chance to bring home a grandfather clock!”
