Late Model News Sam Mayer

15-year-old JRM Late Model Driver Sam Mayer has been voted as this year's CARS Late Model Stock Car Series Most Popular Driver.

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (Nov. 26, 2018) – Sam Mayer, the 15-year-old Wisconsin driver who finished fifth in the Response Energy CARS Tour Late Model Stock Car Series point standings for JR Motorsports, was voted the series’ Most Popular Driver last week following a poll conducted by Race22.com.

Competing alongside defending CARS Tour LMSC champion Josh Berry at JRM, Mayer earned his initial CARS Tour victory on Aug. 25 at Wake County Speedway near Raleigh, N.C. and added three top-five and nine top-10 finishes on the season. In NASCAR Whelen All-American Series action, Mayer won two races, both at Hickory (N.C.) Motor Speedway and added three top-five and five top-10 finishes.

“This season has been insane,” Mayer smiled. “I’ve gone to so many new tracks, in so many different cars. But being a most popular driver in a series is cool and humbling. Obviously, we would have liked to have won some more races in the CARS series this year, but just the chance to race with JR Motorsports is amazing and I have learned so much from Josh and everyone there.”

Mayer, whose father Scott is a former Indy Car and IMSA driver, topped the voting with 39 percent of votes cast, topping fellow second-generation driver Layne Riggs at 34 percent. Lee Pulliam was next, followed by Berry and Ty Gibbs, grandson of legendary NASCAR team owner Joe Gibbs.

The young driver won the 2018 Bojangles Summer Shootout Pro Series title this season at Charlotte Motor Speedway and also competed both the NASCAR K&N Pro Series (two top-five and three top-10 finishes) and ARCA Racing Series (two top-10 runs in two starts).

In February, Mayer missed the Super Late Model title in the 52nd annual World Series of Asphalt Racing at New Smyrna (Fla.) Speedway by a single point. It was his first experience in a Late Model.

Mayer joins Berry as the second JRM Late Model driver to win the award.
