Fall Brawl Hickory Jonathan Shafer Late Model News Sam Mayer

There's a lot on the line this weekend as JRM's Late Model contingent takes to the track for the annual Fall Brawl at Hickory Motor Speedway.

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (Oct. 17, 2019) – Over the past four seasons, JR Motorsports Late Model drivers have won the annual Fall Brawl at Hickory (N.C.) Motor Speedway three times. This weekend, Sam Mayer and Jonathan Shafer will look to make it four out of five.

Mayer will drive the No. 88 JR Motorsports Chevrolet as partner to the 14-year-old Ashland, Ohio driver in the team’s No. 98 this weekend as JRM begins its search for the next driver of its team car to ValleyStar Credit Union 300 winner Josh Berry.

“Dale (Earnhardt Jr.) founded JR Motorsports as a Late Model team to help showcase young and talented drivers, and we take great pleasure in having them in our Chevrolets,” said L.W. Miller, JRM’s Director of Motorsports. “Watching them advance through the various series and seeing them travel up the ladder to the pinnacle of our sport is gratifying, and we are anxious to find the next young champion for 2020.”

The CARS Racing Tour season finale is set for Nov. 2 and Berry is in heavy contention for the championship in his No. 88 All Things Automotive Chevrolet. The annual Myrtle Beach 400 is scheduled for Nov. 23, and the driver for the team’s No. 98 Chevrolet in those races has not yet been announced.

Shafer, who began his career eight years ago in quarter midgets, has embarked on a path that led upward through Outlaw Karts and up to Late Models with the CRA Late Model Sportsman Series. He is the first driver to step into the seat of the No. 98 as the team looks for its next full-time driver.

The Fall Brawl has been a playground for JRM over the past four seasons. Berry took the race last season and in 2015, while current ARCA and NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series driver Anthony Alfredo won the event in 2017. Mayer won the Bobby Isaac Memorial on the .363-mile oval earlier this season.

Drivers such as William Byron, Alfredo, Christian Eckes, Jagger Jones, Scott Bishop and Mayer have raced with JRM’s Late Model team over the past several season alongside Berry, the 2017 CARS Racing Tour Late Model Stock Car champion. Berry leads the all-time CARS Tour standings in victories, poles and several other categories, driving the No. 88 All Things Automotive Chevrolet out of the JRM stable.
